Understanding the Power of Dignity and Choice

By my third day of placement, I was beginning to realise that good support is not only about what we do for people, but also about how much choice and control we leave in their hands. With each passing day at Bupa Aged Care Ashbury, I found myself looking beyond the routines of my responsibilities and shifting my focus towards how individuals experience care and support.

Seeing Dignity in Everyday Practice

Dignity emerges in the smallest of everyday interactions, which often go unnoticed. It is present when we speak respectfully to residents, ask for permission before helping, and allow ample time for their responses. Maintaining personal preferences, respecting privacy, and involving individuals in decisions are factors that contribute significantly to upholding dignity.

Moreover, treating each person as an adult and avoiding assumptions showcases a core value of dignity that transcends professional protocol. It's not merely a principle outlined in training, but a core component of our behaviour that embodies respect and personal recognition.

The Importance of Choice

Choice is vital for wellbeing and self-determination. It allows individuals the space to express what they prefer, what they do not want, and how they wish to participate in their care. The act of making choices, no matter how small, can significantly help maintain a sense of identity, independence, and control.

Supporting Without Taking Over

One of the most profound realizations from day three has been understanding the distinction between helping someone and doing everything for them. There is great importance in encouraging independence where appropriate. Support becomes empowering when it helps a person do more with their own strengths, rather than replacing their abilities. This reflects the essence of strength-based practice and the profound nature of autonomy and self-determination.

Respecting Each Person’s Individuality

It is vital to remember that individuals living in aged care are not a homogeneous group. Each person possesses unique traits and preferences, which should be respected and taken into consideration during their care. Acknowledging these differences enhances their experience and honors their individuality.

As I continue through my placement at Bupa Aged Care Ashbury, I am reminded daily that our role is not to dictate but to engage, support, and uplift the voices of those we serve. Empowering choices and respecting dignity are at the heart of effective care, truly reflecting the person-centered practice that we strive to uphold.
